Patterns

Manmade objects
Relationships among elements in our surroundings, abstracted to simple levels. The interest lies in the textures, shapes, colors and the ways in which they interact.

Natural patterns
Isolation of a few elements in the natural world; a leaf, or a petal, against a background of contrasting color or shapes.

For me, the joy of taking pictures comes from finding within my surroundings the elements that seem to fit together to form a stimulating and evocative image. I seek out patterns of shades, shapes and shadows and try to isolate or reduce the elements to the simplest level.

In some cases the elements appear in nature. This might be an arrangement of rocks, reflections of branches in water, or a bud surrounded by out of focus colors.

In other cases, the patterns are found within objects made by human beings; perhaps an arrangement of colored paper or graffiti against a highly textured wall.

I take pleasure in presenting images of objects that challenge the viewer and that may not be immediately identifiable. It is the composition of the elements and the relationships among the colors and shapes that I find pleasing, not the object itself.

I also try, though not always successfully, to create a feeling of depth in my photos and to bring the viewer into the picture sometimes by the use of color and sometimes by differences in the degree of focus.
