BioI didn't really get a life until my mid-30's. Forty years later, I had a mid-career crisis and gave up my profession as a fisheries economist, which I had found stimulating and rewarding, and developed my long-term hobby of picture taking into a full-time vocation. For several years I trained at the Smithsonian Institution under the tutelage of Kim Kirkpatrick who encouraged me to develop my photographic eye. And then with the generous aid of Frank Lavelle and the constant support and friendship of my mentors, Kay Springwater and John Babineau, I improved my skills and developed the discipline I sorely needed. Now I have left the darkroom and turned to the computer for processing my negatives. This has opened up unbelievable opportunities as well as many challenges, including that of restraining the temptation to fiddle, such as dramatizing the image with high contrast and oversaturated colors. |
